  MONKEYHOUSE

Carmen Rizzo

Wax Seal "Monkeyhouse NACHMO Choreographer"
Carmen leaps in a dark space with one hand on the floor.
By Jessie Jeanne Stinnett
Carmen's choreographic work revolves around discovering what feelings come to surface in difficult times, in societal disagreements, in relationships between people, and feelings that are not fully understood. Movement helps not only express experiences with those feelings, but also empathize with others. It also provides the audiences and dancers with cathartic tools and space to be vulnerable with themselves, finding acceptance and the beauty of allowing oneself to be human.
Collaboration is essential to generate more significant and impactful art as it highlights diversity for the richness it brings to us as humans. It is understanding that multiple perspectives enhance the pool of knowledge and can bring the best out of a process, a partnership and a community.
Her choreographic voice is loud. It brings what is silenced and bottled up out through movement. Although very versatile, her work lives mostly in the contemporary dance world and is always intertwined with other art forms (music, poetry, visual arts...) not only as sources of inspiration but also as a form of amplifying what can't always be said with words. Carmen also typically engages in deep scientific research before conceptualizing dances.
