How To Waltz On Grass!
Workshop with Michael Winward
12:30pm
This workshop will cover some of the fundamentals of the Waltz, including: timing, partnership, weight shift, and 3-4 basic figures (steps). Exercises will be taught to individual participants, and there will be an opportunity to dance in partnership as well (though folks can opt not to dance in partnership if that's preferable). No prior experience or partner necessary to take part; all material can be adapted for dancers using mobility aids including walkers and wheelchairs.
Body Stories
Workshop with Kim Holman* ^
1:00pm
Explore what you have to say with this brief step into physical storytelling. Participants will explore communication through creative movement with a number of short prompts for both sensory experience and composition. All movers and all bodies welcome, no dance or composition experience required.
Improvising Through Uncertainty
Workshop with Nicole Zizzi
1:30pm
This workshop will take the form of a guided movement meditation. Together we will begin to evaluate how current events have been received and held by our bodies, examining if uncertainty may play a role in how we might be sitting with the present moment. No dance experience is required, all abilities are welcome.
Persian Dance
Workshop with Aftab Dance Group
2:00pm
Join members of Aftab Dance Group and learn some foundational Persian dance movements followed by a quick combination to a classic Persian song!
Movement and Music Perspective
Workshop with Juliana Utz
2:30pm
We invite you to join, relax, and explore our outdoor improv jam with Saturday’s immersive perspectives workshop! Participants are encouraged to move throughout the space, change seats, and view the dance from different perspectives at any time. Objects will be provided to participants to look through to further customize their viewing experience. Dancers from Turning Key Dance will be supporting the movement along with Stephen Ambra, who will be accompanying on the cello.

Meet the Organizers

Monkeyhouse is an award winning nonprofit organization based out of Malden that is dedicated to connecting communities to choreography. We are interested in finding ways that choreography impacts everyone and the ways that we all move with meaning every day.

NACHMO (National Choreography Month) is your yearly kick in the pants to create new work! NACHMO Boston is co-hosted by Alive Dance Collective and Monkeyhouse and strives to grow connections in our dance communities and offer both budding and established choreographers a chance to create and present. Participants take on the challenge of creating a new work during January (National Choreography Month), supported by choreographic prompts, mentoring sessions, and connections to the dance community.

Special Thanks

The Malden Dance Mile originated as a collaboration between Monkeyhouse and OnStage Dance Company.
We are forever grateful for Jennifer Kuhnberg and the OnStage Dance Company community.
A huge thank you to Kevin Duffy, the Mayor’s Office, and the City of Malden for helping us get the Malden Dance Mile on its feet this year and every year!
We are so lucky to be part of this community!
Additional special thanks to Jason Ries, Brenna Banister, Laurie Sales, Lauren Rigsby, Juliana Utz, Malden Chamber of Comerce, Urban Media Arts, Pam & Steve Harris, Ron Richards

Accessibility

All Malden Dance Mile sites will be accessible for those with mobility devices. Workshops will be held on the grass, which may have unexpected bumps. Workshop participants are welcome to use the paved path if needed for a flatter surface.

Films will be closed captioned. Some chairs will be provided for those who are unable to sit on the ground. Please let us know if you will need a chair.

Do you have an access need we can meet to make this event more accessible to you? Please let us know!
