What is NACHMO?

NACHMO (National Choreography Month) seeks to build a connected, active, and inclusive community of dance makers across the world.

We aim to make the creative process more accessible to choreographers of all backgrounds, means, and locations. We build this community by challenging choreographers, dancers, and movement enthusiasts to create new dance works.

We are your choreographic kick in the pants.

Choreographed and Performed by Gauri Bhatkhande
Music: "I Will be Your Knight by Jo Wandrini, "Ending Apathy" and "True Fiction" by Reynard Seidel
Costume Design: Pooja Pant
Mentor: Pooja Pant

Arjuna's Dilemma is a central theme in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The story revolves around the character of Arjuna, a skilled warrior who is torn between his duty as a warrior and his sense of morality as he is faced with the prospect of going to war against his own cousins, grandfather, and teachers. His internal moral compass urges him to avoid violence and preserve familial bonds. On the other hand, his memory of the injustice suffered by his wife, brothers, and son at the hands of his enemies is a driving force to continue to fight for what is right. This piece attempts to convey Arjuna's internal conflict and his attempts to rationalize his decisions.

Krishna comes to Vrindavan (Mohiniyattam)
Choreographed and Performed by Sapna Govindan
Music Composer: Maharaja Swati Tirunal

Music: Sankaran Nampoothiri
Lyrics available here

Vrindavan had fallen into an enduring sadness when Krishna left. One night, he came back unexpectedly, and Vrindavan bloomed into life. The peacocks and the deer danced to his flute. The birds tried to catch the tune he played. The flowers bloomed and the breeze felt ever more sweet. Radha, forgetting that he had ever left, danced the Raas with him. Krishna - the eternal lover, the slayer of all sadness and the master of illusion.

Gender is fluid, expansive, ever-changing, and not simply binary. This piece explores the beautiful complexities that come with exploring and owning one's gender identity, the connections that can evolve from it, and how we can continue to challenge society's harsh expectations of gender.

Choreography re-worked for duet by Shipra Avantica Mehrotra

Priya Bangal and Suprita Trilok are dancers of Odissi, a classical dance style from Eastern India. ‘Pallavi’ is an enduring Odissi classic that has been re-worked as a duet for Priya and Suprita’s debut as a duo. Composed to the joyous melody of raaga (melodic scale) 'Shankarabharanam' and delineated by traditional choreography from the Odissi idiom, Priya and Suprita are excited for their debut of this timeless work at NACHMO 2023.

Choreographed by Shirin Kuppusamy
Performed by Laporsha Dees, Tess Saoirse Liddy, Sam Rosenberg
Music: "Wildrnes" by Reynaldo

I started off this piece without a motivation for its creation. Over time, it's morphed to be about the framework through which we perceive and are perceived. Each part of the piece aims to present various fragments of the dancers' reflections that the audience (you) perceive. Artistically, I chose to explore the utilization of edges and shapes and movement for a trio that is unified but not necessarily in unison. I want to thank my dancers - who I only met through NACHMO at the start of January - for patiently embarking on this process with me! I also want to extend a thank you to the following people for mentorship, feedback, resources, personal encouragement, and support throughout this project: Nicole Harris, Brenna Banister, Karen Krolak, Reynaldo Fisher, Katrina Conte, Soumya Rajaram, Michael Winward, Shira Weiss, Lila Klaus, Moriah Jones, Christina Simkovich, Clark Pohl, Annabelle Platt, The Dance Complex, and SomArts (Callie Chapman).
