What is NACHMO?
NACHMO (National Choreography Month) seeks to build a connected, active, and inclusive community of dance makers across the world.
We aim to make the creative process more accessible to choreographers of all backgrounds, means, and locations. We build this community by challenging choreographers, dancers, and movement enthusiasts to create new dance works.
We are your choreographic kick in the pants.

Who is NACHMO Boston?

Their generosity and insightfulness provide our choreographers with invaluable feedback throughout the creation process. Please join us in saying thank you to Jenny Oliver, Jessica Roseman, Anjali Nath, Olivia Blaisdell, and Ryan P. Casey for helping us support this year’s NACHMO Boston choreographers!

Awakening
Choreographed by Shipra Mehrotra
Performed by Priya Bangal
Music by Anagha Bhat
Awakening is a work in Odissi dance that brings to life the sculptures seen in temples of Odisha, India - the land of its origin. The alasa kanya, a languid maiden, awakens by a pond in a serene forest. She indulges in the beauty of her surroundings and herself, which the dance celebrates through iconic movements and postures from the Odissi cannon.

Aftab Dance Group
Choreographed by Anna Dastgheib-Beheshti & Neggin Rostamnezhad
Performed by Anna Dastgheib-Beheshti, Leili Javidannia, Mariam Kish, Nastaran Milani, Neggin Rostamnezhad, Camilia Taheri, Negar Shahsavari

At its core, Aftab Dance Group is a vehicle by which we can share our passion for Iranian culture with our community and bring an audience together by way of dance. Persian dance has many different styles and over the years we have challenged ourselves to take on as many as we can and keep the performances entertaining. The group is run by students and young professionals in the Boston area and has been performing at various cultural events in the Greater Boston and New England area for over 15 years. Aftab hopes audiences can experience the beauty of Iran’s diverse and rich culture through a medley of traditional and modern Iranian dance.

in the Ether
detritus dance
Choreographed and Performed by Caroline Bradbury and Claire Lane
Music: "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain" by Emily Dickinson, read by Julie Harris; "101105" by Keith Fullerton Whitman; "Sleep" by the BYU Singers
Text available here
Caroline and Claire's movement research for “in the Ether” explores ideas of vastness, expansiveness, and cyclical relationships while commenting on the experiences of women in biblical lore. These ideas are derived from imagining the sensations one would experience as they enter “Paradise” or “The Garden of Eden,” and we have been researching this in tandem with a physical cut-paste visual collage practice, as seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/caroclaire/albums/72157720162083724. Caroline and Claire's research has prompted the questions, how can we embody spaces that are not situated in a tangible place, but in our minds and imaginations? What happens when we peel back the layers of our own constructed reality and discover that it is all an illusion? This duet is in development, and a full-length iteration will premiere in June as part of the ArtAssembled residency.
