What is NACHMO?
NACHMO (National Choreography Month) seeks to build a connected, active, and inclusive community of dance makers across the world.
We aim to make the creative process more accessible to choreographers of all backgrounds, means, and locations. We build this community by challenging choreographers, dancers, and movement enthusiasts to create new dance works.
We are your choreographic kick in the pants.

This work is a reflection of fine arts versus movement arts. In my journey, I have discovered that 'dance' does not have the HIGH art label of 2D and 3D mediums, such as painting or sculpting. I appreciate NACHMO for being a space where I can discover how to combine these mediums. I am discovering my kinetic learning is a gift. You move around too much will now be followed by a thank you. Please follow @dancedrawlivelearn for content supporting my journey.
This piece is an exploration of past and present selves through both movement and text; it was developed collaboratively through both theatre and dance devising methods. The words spoken by each dancer are pulled directly from their own journals and life experiences. I am incredibly grateful to this wonderful group of dancers for sharing their stories and creating with authenticity and care.
Con Luces
Choreographed and Performed by Circe Rowan
Music: "Confetti" by Charlotte Cardin
Costume Lights: Hanah Rose Diamond
Circe Rowan is a Boston-based artist working in such diverse disciplines as film, theater, dance, and circus arts. Working both as a solo creator in shows like Tiny & Short/10 Tiny Dances, and OnStage 360°, and in collaboration with organizations like Breaking Light Productions, ANIKAYA, Yosi Karahasi Flamenco, and Monkeyhouse Dance, she is a veteran of several years of NACHMO shows and the 2022 aMaSsiT cohor. She specializes in bringing the glitter and spectacle of circus to the art of flow, performing improvisationally at festivals and events sponsored by local and municipal organizations in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and beyond. When not on stage, she is kept occupied building props and creating costumes for herself and others, and working as an A/V technician to help other artists realize their creative vision.
Special thanks to Yosi Karahashi (http://www.flamencoyosi.com/index.html), for introducing me to flamenco, to Pat Planet (https://www.patplanet.com/) for all the slow body rolls, to the Dance Complex (http://www.dancecomplex.org) for my rehearsal space, and to Hannah Rose Diamond for being my enthusiastic partner in crime.

A piece that has been inspired by Bharatanatyam vocabulary to depict the pain and struggles of life that are silently borne by women universally. In my own life and in observation I realize life is about remaining deep, fluid, and finding connection to build resilience much like the sea. The music accompaniment is a collaboration of original poetry by Maza Dota, spoken by Vanessa Redrgraves, and composed by Anoushka Shankar.

Bharatanatyam is a very complex dance form that combines three main aspects: nrittya is the combination of drama and footwork to create storytelling, natya is the abhinaya and drama aspect and nritta is the pure dance/footwork. Alaripu embodies the nritta aspect and showcases rhythm, spatial awareness, and geometric shapes that are recognizable throughout all dance forms. This particular alarippu is an edm version and is a representation of a combination of eastern and western cultures.

Choreographed and Performed by Christopher Croucher Music: Symphony No 6 in F (Pastorale), Op. 68, Ludwig von Beethoven This work is based on the humor and satire of Sir Terry Pratchett who delighted in pointing out the beautiful ridiculosity of humans and their ways. It's been a pleasure to play with not taking myself too seriously and I lovingly invite you to do the same. |

Join Leah and Matilda again on June 24th and July 13th in Cambridge! Check Instagram and Leah's website for more information. |
